The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has introduced a new rule to stop the misuse of FASTags. From now onwards, your FASTag must be properly stuck on your car’s windshield. If you’re just holding it in your hand or placing it loosely on the dashboard while crossing a toll, it will be considered a “loose FASTag”. Toll booth staff have been told to report such cases. Once reported, your FASTag will be blacklisted. Means, it will stop working and you’ll have to pay toll charges in cash.

This rule is being put in place to prevent fraud and make toll collection smoother and faster. Some people use the same FASTag for multiple vehicles, which causes confusion and delays. Plus, with new systems like the FASTags-based Annual Pass (₹3,000 for 200 trips a year) and the upcoming Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) technology—where cars can pass through tolls without stopping—having the FASTag correctly placed on the windshield becomes even more important. If it’s not, scanners might not detect it, leading to toll errors or traffic jams.
So, if you’re using FASTag, make sure it’s firmly stuck to your car’s windshield. Don’t try to use it for more than one vehicle. A small step like this helps keep traffic flowing smoothly, reduces fraud, and makes toll payment easier for everyone on the road.
