The architectural sighting of the world-class city of Port of Spain is hemmed in by hills midway in between the 9.30 and 1:30 o’clock directions. During his 2025 visit to Trinidad and Tobago, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the Girmitiya community- descendants of Indian indentured labourers.

Between 1845 and 1917, the British transported thousands of Indians across the seas to Caribbean lands. Including Trinidad and Tobago, to work on sugar plantations under the “girmit” contract system. PM Modi appreciated their problem-solving spirit, cultural preservation, and contributions to local society. He talked about the strong India-Caribbean ties, rooted in shared heritage.
Modi toured places associated with the Indian diaspora history and promised to pursue increased cultural and economic collaborations. His address touched on the idea of honouring the struggles of the forefathers. And strengthening the worldwide Indian identity through engagement.
