Sao Joao Festival:

Viva Sao Joao!”

Chai, Chapters & Clouds: Best Places to Read in Monsoon

When the world slows down, and the rain writes poetry on your windows. There are days when the world feels like too much- too loud, too fast. And then comes the monsoon. Suddenly, everything softens. Leaves look greener. Time seems to pause for a moment. If you’re a reader, you know that this isn’t just a change in weather — it’s an invitation. To make chai, pull out that half-read book. To sit by a window and listen to rain tap against the glass while a story unfolds in your hands. A Season Made for Stories Reading in the monsoon isn’t just about escaping into another world — it’s about slowing down in this one. But finding the right place to read during the rains? That’s a whole experience in itself. So whether you’re in a big city, a quiet hill town, or planning a short getaway — here’s a lovingly-researched list of the best places to read books during monsoon in India. Some are cafes, some libraries, some entire villages. All have one thing in common -they’re made for chai, chapters, and clouds. Rainy Day Cafes That Feel Like Home in monsoon Some cafes aren’t just about food or coffee- they’re about comfort. They invite you to stay. To flip pages. And they become even more magical when it rains. The Tea Room by Blossom Kochhar – Delhi Hidden in a leafy corner of Hauz Khas Village, this cafe smells of lavender and lemongrass. The rain here feels cinematic- you sit by tall French windows, sipping warm chamomile tea, and you read without looking at the clock. It’s a place where poetry feels natural. Cafe 1947 – Manali Set right next to the roaring Beas River, this place has a wood-and-stone aesthetic that feels European. When the clouds descend on the valley and the air smells of pine, this cafe becomes the perfect hideout for travel journals, fantasy novels, or that book you’ve been carrying since forever. Bookworm Cafe – Goa Goa in monsoon is quieter, gentler, more romantic. This hidden café-library hybrid in Panaji is perfect for solo readers. Pick a nook, order a masala chai, and let the rain outside become your reading playlist. Libraries That Whisper Peace ft. Monsoon Monsoon brings a certain kind of silence — not empty, but thoughtful. Libraries, especially old ones, echo that mood perfectly. David Sassoon Library – Mumbai One of India’s oldest libraries, located in the heart of South Mumbai. Its colonial-era architecture, creaky wooden chairs, and rain-slicked stone courtyard make it feel like you’ve stepped into a Satyajit Ray film. Great place for classics, biographies, and rainy-day nostalgia. State Central Library – Bengaluru Right next to Cubbon Park, this red-and-white heritage building is a reader’s sanctuary. After an hour of reading inside, you can step out and take a long rain walk under trees. It feels like reading and living your own story, both at once. British Council Libraries – Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata Modern, minimal, and full of sunlight (and rainlight!) through big windows. These libraries are perfect for quiet reading, solo work, or browsing new international fiction. Bonus: there’s often a cozy café next door. Hill Stations That Hug You While You Read in monsoon Monsoon transforms India’s hills. The clouds roll in, mist covers the trees, and everything feels like a painting. Hill stations during rain are heaven for readers. Pachmarhi – Madhya Pradesh Often called “Queen of the Satpuras”, Pachmarhi is serene and lush during the rains. Colonial-era bungalows, jungle trails, and echoing silence make it ideal for long novels or spiritual reads. Bring a thick shawl, find a verandah, and just read. Landour – Mussoorie A small, sleepy hill-town where the great Ruskin Bond lives. With its pine-scented air, cobbled paths, and vintage bookshops like “Sisters Bazaar,” Landour is for people who don’t just love books — they live through them. Munnar – Kerala In Munnar, clouds walk through tea gardens. Stay in a homestay on the hillside, listen to rain fall on tin roofs, and read stories that match the rhythm of the monsoon — slow, beautiful, deep. Perfect for memoirs or nature writing. Urban corners for Rainy Escapes Even in a buzzing city, there are places where you can curl up with a book and forget where you are. Champaca Bookstore & Cafe – Bangalore A bookstore built with love. With books carefully chosen, a cozy balcony, and strong coffee, this is where people fall back in love with reading. It even hosts monsoon-themed reading circles and workshops. Kunzum Travel Cafe – Delhi & Gurgaon With wooden interiors, chai that never ends, and soft cushions, Kunzum feels like someone built it just for readers. Plus, you can pay as you like — so no pressure, just peace. Offbeat Retreats Where Nature Reads With You! If you want to disappear for a few days — just you, books, and the rain — these places are perfect: Vanghat Eco-Lodge (Corbett) – No signal, no Wi-Fi, just forests and books. Deodar Manor (Dharamshala) – Mountain views, misty mornings, and a library that smells of old paper. Saffron Stays Parsi Manor (Matheran) – Rain on tiled roofs, vintage teacups, and storybook silence. What Should You Read This Monsoon? Every rain deserves its story. Here are some perfect pairings: For Moody Weather: Wuthering Heights, The Bell Jar, The God of Small Things Gentle Days: The Little Prince, Tuesdays with Morrie, Ruskin Bond’s monsoon tales Indian Monsoon Feels: Gulzar’s short stories, Tagore, R.K. Narayan, Anita Desai For Nature & Solitude: The Hidden Life of Trees, Pilgrim at Tinker Creek, Mary Oliver’s poems Let the World Slow Down.. The beauty of reading in the rain isn’t just in the book- it’s in the mood. It’s in the smell of chai, the foggy windows, the thunder in the distance, the world turning soft and still. We spend so much of our time moving fast — monsoon reminds us to pause. So find your corner. Light a candle. Make some tea.

Monsoon and Murals: When the Rain Inspires Wall Art

Once the skies go dark and the very first raindrops of the monsoon kiss the Earth, something magical begins to happen—this magic is felt within the surroundings, in our hearts, in our minds, and… on our walls. Yes! In the cities and towns, there is a thriving trend of monsoon-inspired murals, marrying the charm of rain with street art creativity. From nostalgic paper boats to the neon-laden rainy cityscape, walls are slowly renewing themselves as living canvases for season celebrations. Welcome to the world where Monsoon and Murals merge, where every raindrop tells a tale. Rainy Cityscapes With Neon Lights Imagine it’s a rainy night in Mumbai or Tokyo—the lights spotlighting the glistening streets, umbrellas moving smoothly through puddles, and raindrops falling like poetry. Murals of rainy cityscapes with glowing neon elements are trending in cafes, in urban art corners, and at boutique hotels. They set the cinematic mood that makes the space look dreamy, nostalgic, and alive. Perfect for: Lounge walls, urban streets, and nightlife venues. Umbrella Dreams What could be more evocative of the monsoons than an umbrella? Artists now prefer umbrellas as colorful design elements-raining down in pattern variation, floating over children, or perhaps gliding down an amorous pair. Such a bright motif converts dull walls into a celebration of hope, protection, and joy. Perfect for: Kids zones, parks, schools, cultural spaces Monsoon Romance The rain and romance have always been best friends on screen, in songs, and in real life. The mural of couples sharing an umbrella, dancing in the rain, or strolling under cloudy skies strikes an emotional chord. These paintings are usually done in muted hues and silhouettes depicting an unspoken romance that everyone can relate to. Perfect for: Cafés, libraries, colleges, even the corner of your bedroom Dancing in the Rain This mural theme is dedicated to the unadulterated joy of dancing in the rain- splashing with feet, wide open arms, and happy faces. Either abstract or realistic, these murals call people out to reconnect with their inner child and be free again: the perfect representation of liberty and fun. Perfect for: Spaces for youth, gyms, community centres. Monsoon Musing: Where Poetry Meets Paint Words and water go hand in-hand in this unusual mural style. Think of hand-painted haikus, couplets, or local poetry interspersed in raindrop patterns or against grey clouds. A written emotion combined with artistic expression deepens walls, making passersby stop and read to ponder for a moment. Perfect for: Libraries, literary cafes, college walls From Cloudburst to Bloom A lovely image to consider-rainfall bringing forth the bloom of flowers. Under this theme, murals show the rainwater nourishing the earth and helping barren lands to blossom into meadows, trees, or floral designs. It is a visual story of metamorphosis, with healing, and a little magic from nature’s own cycles. Perfect for: Hospitals, healing environments, nature-friendly spaces Seasonal Spirits- The Monsoon Gods Drawn from Indian mythology and folklore, these murals might depict the gods of rain, the apsaras dancing in the clouds, and animals reveling in the season. These murals tie up with the divine and the natural, thus channelling a spiritual essence into monsoon art. Earthy hues and traditional motifs are used to lend an air of richness and culture. Perfect for: Temple walls, culture hubs, art festivals in rural areas. Mirror of the Sky: Puddle Reflections Have you ever noticed how puddles capture the world upside down? This mural trend uses puddles as mirrors, reflecting skies, trees, or passing people. It creates an illusion, transforming a wall into a world of wonder. These reflective murals are both clever and calming. Perfect for: Museum spaces, art galleries, modern offices Paper Boat Diaries Remember those childhood days when we made paper boats and floated them in the rain? This mural theme brings back that memory. Walls are painted with hundreds of tiny boats, often carrying handwritten notes or local stories. It combines murals with memories. Perfect for: Schools, community walls, children’s museums Rains and Rhythms Music and the monsoon go hand in hand. This mural series features instruments like sitars, tablas, or modern guitars surrounded by raindrops and clouds. Some even include visuals of monsoon ragas, linking classical music to visual art. Perfect for: Music studios, performance venues, cafes Nature’s Symphony Frogs croaking, birds chirping, and peacocks dancing—monsoon brings nature to life with sound. Murals of vibrant trees, playful animals, and monsoon wildlife add earthy charm to any space. The use of natural tones and textured paints makes these walls immersive and joyful. Perfect for: Parks, nature centres, eco-lodges Season of Letters In this poetic mural concept, rain appears as falling letters, love notes, or blue ink. Walls look like open diaries with smudged words and ink trails. It’s emotional, nostalgic, and deeply artistic. Perfect for: Reading cafés, writers’ corners, bookstores Cloud Graffiti: Whimsical Skies Add a touch of fun with murals that feature expressive clouds—some frowning, others laughing, and some sleeping or sneezing rain. It’s playful and cartoonish, perfect for engaging children and the young at heart. Perfect for: Toy stores, indoor playgrounds, preschools The Grey-to-Green Transformation This theme uses mural space to show a “before and after” transformation—on one side, dry cracked earth; on the other, green fields bursting with life, separated by a streak of rain. It symbolizes climate change, revival, and the role of rain in sustaining life. Perfect for: Environmental campaigns, educational walls, government buildings Tea, Chai, and Pakoras Let’s be honest—no monsoon is complete without chai and pakoras! Artists are painting chai cups whose steam turns into clouds or pakoras falling like raindrops. It’s fun, relatable, and especially for Indian audiences. Perfect for: Food trucks, cafes, Instagram-worthy restaurant walls Final Thoughts: Art That Flows Like Rain Monsoon murals aren’t just decorative; they tell stories, reflect emotions, and mark culture. In a world focused on content-driven design and shareable spaces, these murals start conversations. They connect people with memories, nature, and each other. Whether you’re an artist, café owner, urban planner, or someone who simply loves
